Metro, March 9-13

This week, an overview of the Brandywine Valley Wine Trail's annual Barrels on the Brandywine festival of barrel tastings, small previews of Matthew Shipp's trio at Art Alliance and Curtis Opera Theatre's Wozzeck at the Kimmel, and a much-reduced interview with longtime James Brown saxman Maceo Parker, in town with his own group.

This week: A preview of I-House's wonderful upcoming retrospective on filmmaker, painter, composer, and philanthropist Jerome Hill and reviews of Wayne Kramer's Crossing Over and the wholly unnecessary remake of Last House on the Left. Then there's Soundadvice blurbs for German trio Grid Mesh at Gojjo and NYC's Ensemble Pamplemousse on a Bowerbird bill, and a Naked City feature about Chris' Jazz Cafe's R&B/funk/jazz happy hour, Sunset Sessions.

This week, a piece on British orchestral-Goth-lounge act the Tindersticks and an interview with composer Andrea Clearfield about her new piece, "Lung-Ta", inspired by a trek to Nepal.

Metro, February 23-27

Just one piece this week, on PRISM Quartet's collaboration with Music From China, a set of world premieres of work's combining sax quartet with traditional Chinese instruments.

I'm all over this week's Citypaper, starting with the cover, my second interview piece with Philly-area-born identical twin animators/eccentrics the Brothers Quay. The brothers will be in town in conjunction with an exhibition of the decors (read: sets) from their films and an award ceremony/screenings at the Film Festival.

Also, a feature on the Painted Bride's Big Ears project, a residency with drummer/composer John Hollenbeck, culminating in performances by his Large Ensemble and a 12-piece ensemble of Philly musicians; a pick for the second of three Ars Nova Workshop-presented Composer Portraits of Julius Hemphill, this one featuring his big band music performed by Bobby Zankel's Warriors of the Wonderful Sound, supplemented by Marty Ehrlich; Soundadvice blurbs for Stebmo and Matt Wilson's Arts and Crafts; a film sidebar on I-House's screening of Urgh! A Music War, waxing nostalgic for Night Flight; a review of Two Lovers; and a pick for PMA's new "Cezanne and Beyond" show.

This week: A preview for Mardi Gras of the Boston-based avant-brass band Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, an interview with saxophonist Loren Stillman, and a piece on hip-hop dance choreographer Rennie Harris' sci-fi piece, 100NakedLocks.
